Morris, a former professor at the University of Richmond, told about 1,000 people at a ceremony that the ability to change is what the college will need most in the future.
"The capacity for self-evaluation and change is one of the features that distinguishes a first-rate institution from a mediocre one," he said.
He also warned that the Methodist-affiliated liberal-arts college must "continue to resist the prevalent trend toward secularization."
Morris succeeds Charles Sydnor, who resigned to become chief executive officer of Central Virginia Educational Telecommunications Corp.
Approximately 800 students attend Emory & Henry, which was founded in 1836.
