ROCKY MOUNT MAN WINS VIRGINIA WESTERN RACE

Gerald Crouse of Rocky Mount won the men's division of the 12th annual Virginia Western 5,000 Meter Run at the community college's campus. He completed the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 33.29 seconds.

Ken Monger of Roanoke was second in 16:42.30 and Jeff Stone of Salem finished third in 17:02.34.

Laura Southwick of Salem captured the women's title in 19:40.05. Patricia Alonso of Roanoke was second in 19:55.22 and Malin Westlund finished third in 20:09.42.

The Virginia women's track and field team finished third and the men's team placed fourth in the Gatorade Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. Pam Lemons of Floyd County placed third in the 100-meter dash with a tiome of 11.68, qualifying her provisionally for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.

Appalachian State won its second straight Southern Conference men's outdoor track and field championship and the Mountaineer women won their sixth straight title at Boone, N.C.

The Appalachian State men scored 140 1/2 points, 24 1/2 better than second place VMI.
