Police and community leaders collected more than 300 guns and 550 pounds of ammunition at sites in Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia in an effort to stem accidents and domestic violence.
Organizers asked residents to surrender legally and illegally owned weapons, with no questions asked.
"We just want to get the guns off the streets, we don't care where they come from," said Raymond M. Kight, the sheriff in Montgomery County, Md.
Police said one woman turned in a 50-year-old derringer she thought was a toy but which turned out to be a fully loaded weapon.
