BURTON SNAPS 35-RACE WINLESS STREAK

Ward Burton snapped a 35-race winless streak in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series when he dominated and won the Rose's Stores 300 at Orange County Speedway on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old Burton, driving a Buick, led 259 of the 300 laps on the .375-mile track. The win was his first since a Feb. 29, 1992, victory at Rockingham.

The South Boston, Va., driver collected $14,820.

Larry Pearson of Spartanburg, S.C., finished second in a Chevrolet, 2.58 seconds behind, with Steve Grissom of Gadsden, Ala., third, also in a Chevrolet.

Grissom's finish, coupled with a 14th-place finish by series leader David Green, moved Grissom into first place in the points standings after eight of 28 events.

Joe Bessey of Scarborough, Maine, was fourth in an Oldsmobile, with Butch Miller of Lawton, Mich., fifth in an Oldsmobile.

Atlanta Falcons coach Jerry Glanville failed to make the starting field. He was the slowest of the 32 cars that attempted to qualify.
