OBIT STARKE, ALICE SMITH
STARKE, Alice Smith, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 28, 1993. Mrs.
Starke was the widow of H. Melville Starke Jr. of Richmond, Va. and later of
Ormond Beach, Fla. Born in 1900, she was the daughter of Dr. Richard
McAllister Smith (for many years a professor of Greek and Latin at Randolph
Macon College, Ashland) and Minnie Banks Smith. They later lived in Montgomery
and Birmingham, Ala. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Starke
Garthwaite, London, England; three grandchildren, Douglas M. Brown, Bethesda,
Md., Mrs. Elizabeth Dade Bridgeman-Williams, London, England, Nigel Greig,
Pound Ridge, N.Y.; one sister, Mrs. Marion S. Looney, Roanoke; one niece, Mrs.
Claiborne Foster, Greenville, S.C.; two nephews, Dr. Edmund Lowney, Columbus,
Ohio, John L. Smith, California. Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m.
Monday, May 3, 1993, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, by Dr. John W. Newman. A
graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1993, in Westview
Cemetery, Farmville, Va. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke.
