SYLVIA CLUTE IS A GOOD ALTERNATIVE

I WAS VERY happy to learn that Sylvia Clute is considering a campaign for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate race next year. Although I have supported Sen. Robb and Gov. Wilder in past campaigns, I have been thoroughly disappointed with their performance in a number of areas, not the least of which has been their ongoing feud with each other.

For some time now, I have been hoping that another appropriate Democrat would step forward and provide a viable alternative. In my opinion, the worst possible course would be a Robb-Wilder battle that would result in turning the seat over to the likes of Oliver North. God forbid!

Through my former employment with the Virginia Department of Children in Richmond, I am familiar with Ms. Clute's advocacy efforts in the General Assembly. I am confident that a campaign based on her record and her positions on the issues would engender the support of a majority of Virginians. WILLIAM D. BESTPITCH ROANOKE
