KUWAIT PLANS TO BUILD BARRIER ON IRAQ BORDER

Kuwait will dig a 10-foot-deep trench along its border with Iraq and back it with a 10-foot sand barrier, the defense minister said.

Sheik Ali al-Sabah said the Cabinet approved the plan, the newspaper Al-Watan reported Sunday. The digging of the 16-foot-wide trench along the 130-mile-long border should begin in three months, Sheik Ali said.

Iraq has not recognized the new border demarcation set by a U.N. committee following the Persian Gulf War.

Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990 and occupied the emirate for nearly seven months before being ousted by U.S.-led forces.

Sheik Ali also said Kuwait will sign a defense pact with Russia. He told Al-Watan the accord will be signed in August, but gave no other details.
