EX-TECH COACH DIES

Frank Teske Sr., a builder of championship wrestling teams in a 23-year coaching career at Virginia Tech, died Sunday of heart failure. He was 78.

Teske coached Tech wrestlers from 1951 to 1974, leading the Hokies to three straight undefeated seasons in the mid-1950s. In a 10- Teske coached Tech wrestlers from 1951 to 1974, leading the Hokies to three straight undefeated seasons in the mid-1950s. year span beginning in 1954, his teams swept seven Southern Conference championships, including an unprecedented four in a row.

His overall coaching record was 123-96-4.

Teske spent many years as an associate professor of physical education at Virginia Tech. Since retiring from that position he had worked as an assistant in the Tech athletic ticket office.

A native of South Haven, Mich., Teske received his undergraduate degree in physical education from Michigan State and a master's degree in horticulture from Virginia Tech.

He is survived by three sons, Frank Teske Jr. of Blacksburg, Richard Teske of McLean and Charles Teske of Blacksburg; two sisters, Virginia T. Smith of Raleigh, N.C., and Dawn T. Porter of Richmond; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The Virginia Tech Athletic Fund.
