HIGHLANDERS OUTSLUG CAVS

Radford belted a school-record 24 hits and defeated Virginia 16-11 in college baseball on Sunday at Dedmon Center Park in Radford.

The Highlanders (22-15) jumped to an early lead with a six-run first inning. Virginia tied the score at 7 in the third inning, but Radford scored two more runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to put away the Cavaliers (18-28).

Sophomore Mike Walker (4-1), who came on in the third and pitched five innings, earned the win for Radford, allowing three hits and no runs. Kent Kruse (3-4) was the loser for Virginia.

Duane Filchner broke Radford's season record for runs batted in with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning. The left fielder also hit a two-run home run in the third inning. He has 52 RBI, surpassing Phillip Haney's 1992 record of 50.

The previous Radford record for hits in a game was 22, set against VMI in 1989.

In another college game:

At Charleston, S.C., Western Carolina defeated VMI twice Sunday to earn the championship of the Southern Conference Tournament.

The second-seeded Catamounts (32-24) beat eighth-seeded VMI 12-5 in the afternoon to force the title game, which they won 5-1.

The Keydets, who finish the season at 20-29, were limited to two hits in the championship game.

In the opener, Western Carolina sophomore Jason Beverlin (11-1) pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out six and walking two in his record-setting third win of the tournament. Marc Phillips (3-10) took the loss for VMI. He pitched 3 innings, giving up eight hits and six runs while walking one.

VMI scored in the third inning on a a single by Brian Adams and in the eighth on a ground ball by Billy Terry. Louie Napoleon contributed two doubles.
