Davis, of South Boston, was driving west on U.S. 360 in Halifax County when his car failed to make a turn onto Virginia 832, state police said. The car ran off the road and struck a tree.
Marlin C. Moody, 28, of South Boston, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 a.m., state police said.
Davis was listed in stable condition Sunday, according to Karen Brasch, supervisor at Halifax Community Hospital. Another passenger, whose name was listed as Mr. Daniels, was evaluated for trauma and discharged.
Team doctors hope to have Davis return to Dallas by Monday for treatment, Mavericks spokesman Tony Fay said.
"He shattered his left elbow, and he's being kept in the hospital for 24 hours for observation," Fay said.
Davis has long credited his success to being left-handed. He once said it was an advantage on the court because "most guys want to play you to the right, so being left-handed helps. I hate to guard someone who is left-handed."
Davis, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound power forward and center, played for Miami for two seasons before joining the Mavericks as a free agent in 1991. He played college basketball at Virginia Union.
He averaged 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds for Dallas this season.
