These skills, Maxey says, not only will benefit her pupils later in life, but are helping them now. "My children are learning because they're doing their best, and they're behaving because they're showing respect for me and their classmates."
Maxey, a 20-year teaching veteran, said she especially enjoys teaching science because it develops her pupils' problem-solving skills. "Science lets them learn how to ask a question and come up with the answer," she said.
