MAGNA VISTA PITCHER IS NEARLY PERFECT

Donna Hickman pitched a six-inning no-hitter - and just missed a perfect game - as Magna Vista crushed host Martinsville 20-0 in a Piedmont District girls' softball game on Monday.

Hickman faced 19 batters, one more than the minimum, in a game shortened because of the slaughter rule. She struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter. Martinsville's only baserunner reached on an error with two out in the third inning.

Temika Hodge was 4-for-4 with a double, triple, five RBI and three stolen bases for Magna Vista, which improved to 10-2 overall and in the district. Emily Johnson and Ashley Vipperman each drove in two runs.

In other softball Monday:

At Bassett, the Bengals committed 13 errors as Patrick County won a Piedmont District game 10-9. Kim Mabe was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Patrick County led 10-7 going into the bottom of the seventh when Missy Meeks, who was 3-for-5, hit a two-out, two-run home run. But the rally ended there for Bassett (6-5 overall and in the district).

At Buchanan, James River wiped out Covington in a doubleheader, 8-0 and 24-2. In the first game, Sherry Allison pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out 12 in five innings, and Amber Vines went 3-for-3. In the second game, Kara Mundy struck out 11 in earning the win.

At Glenvar, Jennifer Dennis was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI as Glenvar defeated Northside 6-1. Bobbie Jo Wright struck out nine for the Highlanders (8-5) while giving up three hits. Shannon Yopp was 2-for-3 with a double for the Vikings (3-6).

\ BASEBALL: At Wytheville, Randy Blevins was the winning pitcher and drove in three runs as George Wythe beat Rural Retreat 16-6 in a Hogoheegee District game. Eric Sayers was 2-for-4 with four RBI and Tony Callahan 3-for-3 with three RBI for Wythe (5-6 overall and in the district). Eric Bass and Jamie Rosenbaum each went 2-for-3 for Rural Retreat (0-8 overall); Rosenbaum had three RBI.

At Glenvar, Rob Robinson's first-inning three-run home run got the Highlanders started on an 8-1 Pioneer District victory over Bath County. Joey Hutton was 3-for-4 and scored three runs and Eric East was 2-for-4 for Glenvar (4-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the district). David Henderson and Jason Anderson combined on a five-hitter. Bath County is 4-2 in the district.

At Ridgeway, Spencer Johnson pitched the victory and added two hits as Fieldale-Collinsville defeated Magna Vista 4-2. Todd Pringle had a run-scoring hit in the second inning, and the Cavaliers added two runs in the fifth on a hit and three errors.

At Floyd, Peter Bucklin had two doubles and three RBI as Floyd handled Radford 9-4. Josh Howery added two hits and two RBI for the Buffaloes, and Sammy Burton pitched three innings of relief for the win. For the Bobcats, Eric Brittle had a home run and two RBI.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Host Northside bombarded Alleghany in a 13-0 Blue Ridge District victory. The Vikings (4-6-1 overall, 4-4 in the district) outshot the Mountaineers 61-2. Matt Curfiss and Jason Belcher each scored three times, and Belcher had two assists. J.J. Larsen added two assists.

At Martinsville, the Bulldogs rolled past Laurel Park 4-0 in a Piedmont District game. Carson Shearer had two goals and Link Shaw and Greg Barth one each for Martinsville (7-5 overall, 5-0 in the district). Laurel Park is 4-3 and 4-2.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Martinsville, Aimee Beightol's three goals helped Cave Spring drill the Bulldogs 6-1 in a non-district game. Tiffany Jackson had two goals and Chanda Ingram scored for Cave Spring. Beth Kirby scored for Martinsville (3-2-1).
