RVC SLAMS NORTH CROSS

Brian Hurt's third-inning grand slam sent Roanoke Valley Christian to a 10-3 Virginia Independent Conference baseball victory over host North Cross on Monday.

Hurt, who was 2-for-4, connected to make the score 5-0. RVC is 6-4 overall and 6-4 in the VIC. Jason Davis had two hits, including a solo home run, for the Raiders (3-9, 3-7).

In other baseball:

At Glenvar, Rob Robinson's first-inning three-run home run got the Highlanders started on an 8-1 Pioneer District victory over Bath County. Joey Hutton was 3-for-4 and scored three runs for Glenvar (4-4-1, 4-2).

\ SOFTBALL: At North Cross, Michelle Albers had three hits, including a home run and four RBI, as Holy Cross slugged North Cross 16-7. For the Raiders, Carolyn Jones went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Blair Calvert homered.

At Glenvar, Jennifer Dennis was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI as Glenvar defeated Northside 6-1. Bobbie Jo Wright struck out nine for the Highlanders (8-5) while giving up three hits. Shannon Yopp was 2-for-3 with a double for the Vikings (3-6).

At Rocky Mount, Stephanie Webb was 4-for-4 with five RBI as Roanoke Valley Christian pummeled Christian Heritage 25-4. Amy Helton was 2-for-4 with three RBI for RVC (7-4).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Host Northside bombarded Alleghany in a 13-0 Blue Ridge District victory. The Vikings (4-6-1, 4-4) outshot the Mountaineers 61-2. Matt Curfiss and Jason Belcher each scored three times.

At North Cross, the Raiders got second-half goals from Forest Porterfield, A.J. Esguerra and Robert Rude to shut out Roanoke Catholic 3-0. North Cross is 10-1-2; the Celtics are 3-5.

At Lord Botetourt, Michael Berry had two goals and an assist to lead William Byrd (10-0, 8-0) to a 4-0 win over Lord Botetourt (7-3, 6-2) in a Blue Ridge District game.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: Pendleton Grove scored two goals and Richard Lesko had 15 saves as Patrick Henry downed visiting Cave Spring 5-2.

At Vinton, Jay Reynolds had four goals and two assists as Vinton edged Salem 10-9. Brian Cooley added three goals and Kirk Lancaster had eight saves.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Salem, Erin Jones' three goals propelled the Spartans to a 7-0 victory over Stuart Hall in a non-district game. Heather Moore had two goals and Andrea Jones and Karen Eggers one each for Salem (4-2-1).

At River's Edge Sports Complex, Natalie Dibling scored two goals and seven other Patriots scored as Patrick Henry defeated Magna Vista 9-0. Shannon Groves had two saves for PH (5-0-1), which outshot Magna Vista 37-4.

\ TENNIS: At Salem, the Spartans (9-1, 9-0) beat Rockbridge County 9-0 to clinch the Blue Ridge District regular-season title and the top seeding in the tournament next week.

\ GOLF: At Countryside, Roanoke Valley Christian (11-0) won a VIC match, scoring 162 over nine holes to North Cross' 169 and Hargrave Military Academy's 180. North Cross' Tyler Pugh, RVC's Benji Kitts and HMA's Rafael Romero shared the low score, 38.
