TERRY WAR CHEST DOMINATES FIELD

While three Republicans scrap and claw for the right to oppose her, Mary Sue Terry, the almost-certain Democratic nominee for governor, is heading toward the fall campaign with a $1.5 million war chest.

Terry has raised $2.07 million and spent $565,000, according to a report filed with the state Board of Elections. Since Jan. 1, Terry has raised $837,000, according to the report.

Monday was the deadline for candidates to file campaign contribution reports for the first four months of the year. As of 5 p.m., only one of Terry's three potential Republican opponents - Del. Clinton Miller of Woodstock - had filed.

Spokesmen for the other two GOP contenders - George Allen and Earle Williams - said they planned to mail their reports Monday evening, but declined to reveal fund-raising information.

Terry, who has token opposition for the Democratic nomination Saturday, is expected to have a wide lead in fund raising over the Republicans. Miller reported raising just $115,000 and spending all but $26,000 of it.

In disclosures made at the end of last year, GOP front-runner Allen had raised $393,000. Williams had reported raising $1.3 million.

Lt. Gov. Donald Beyer, a Democrat seeking re-election, reported raising $292,000 and spending $93,000. Republican Michael Farris has raised $127,000 and spent $115,000. Reports were not available for Bobbie Kilberg, who also is seeking the GOP nomination.

In the attorney general's race, Arlington lawyer William Dolan, unopposed for the Democratic nomination, has raised $235,000 and spent $116,000. Del. Steven Agee, R-Salem, has raised $145,000 and spent $107,000. No report was available from James Gilmore, the Henrico County commonwealth's attorney who also is seeking the nomination.
