ROANOKE TO HONOR PRAYER DAY

For the second year, an ecumenical prayer service called Meet at City Hall will be held in Roanoke on the National Day of Prayer.

Thursday's service will be held from 12:20 until 12:40 p.m. in Lee Plaza, behind the Roanoke Municipal Building.

In case of rain, the service will be moved indoors across the street to Greene Memorial United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Richard Harris, chaplain for the Roanoke and Roanoke County jails, will open the prayers. Other participants are encouraged to participate in silent prayer for the nation.

There will be three parking spaces reserved for the handicapped near the plaza marked with "no parking" signs. A few chairs will be available for those who need them.

National days of prayer have been declared periodically since 1775, when the Continental Congress declared the first one. In 1988, Congress established the recurring National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday in May.

A prayer vigil is planned Thursday at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 3550 Poplar Drive S.W. from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

That will be followed by a prayer service, beginning at 7 p.m. Both the vigil and the evening service are open to any who wish to participate.
