GORDON C. REID, `EBB AND ANDY' TV STAR, DIES

Gordon C. Reid, who brought laughs to Roanoke and Lynchburg television viewers as half of "The Ebb and Andy Show" during the late 1950s and early 1960s, died Monday. He was 68.

Reid, of Vinton, played Ebb Tide, a corn pone character who carried a moonshine jug and a musket. His kinfolk had such names as Hi Tide, Low Tide, Rip Tide and Ma and Pa Tide.

The show, written by Andy Petersen, the Andy in the title, blended mountain music and jokes during the early days of the Roanoke-Lynchburg television market on WSLS-TV (Channel 10).

Reid and Petersen reunited in 1983 to make commercials for Ewald-Clark and Curtis-Mathes Home Entertainment Centers.

A graveside funeral will be held Thursday at noon at the Rader family cemetery in Moneta. Lotz Vinton Chapel is handling the arrangements.
