2 IN GOP CONSIDER SUPERVISOR'S RACE

Two Republicans are weighing a run for the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors seat held by Democrat Bob Johnson.

Brenda Flora Wainwright, a mortgage loan officer whose brother, Richard C. Flora, served on the Board of Supervisors from 1972-1976, has scheduled a news conference Friday at Mountain View Elementary School.

Charles L. Millican, manager of a manufacturing company and an anti-consolidation activist, has scheduled a news conference Thursday at the County Administration Building.

Republicans will hold a mass meeting Saturday to select a candidate for the Hollins District seat, which Johnson has held since 1986.

Johnson, who is expected to seek a third term, said he will announce his plans Friday or Monday.

Three board seats will be on the ballot in November. Johnson so far is the only incumbent with opposition. Republican Lee Eddy is seeking a second consecutive four-year term from the Windsor Hills District and Democrat Harry Nickens is seeking his fourth full term from the Vinton District.

Republicans - who hold a 3-2 majority on the Board of Supervisors - have been recruiting Wainwright to oppose Johnson.

A native of Hollins, Wainwright has two children in county schools and is an officer in the Mountain View Elementary PTA.

"I'm considering running," she acknowledged Tuesday. "I feel I have enough knowledge of county government and zoning and how businesses operate that I could do a good job."

Millican met with GOP leaders Tuesday to make his intentions known.

A resident of the Bonsack area, Millican has been active in several community organizations led by consolidation foe Don Terp.

Millican could not be reached for comment, but Terp confirmed that Millican would seek the GOP nomination.
