OBIT SMITH, FRED HENRY
SMITH, Fred Henry, 84, of Roanoke, died at his home Monday morning. He was
a retired teacher and coach in the Roanoke City school system and a member of
Virginia Heights Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wives, Jane
D. Smith and Hester S. Smith. Surviving are one daughter, Nada Jane Von
Mahland, Connecticut; one stepdaughter, Hester Yvonne Shingleton; four
stepsons, Jerry Edward Sweeney, Milton Wayne Sweeney, Anthony Phillip Sweeney,
Larry Edward Sweeney, all of Roanoke; a sister, Margaret S. Sjoberg, Illinois;
two grandchildren, Willie H. Von Mahland, Hila Jane Von Mahland; seven
stepgrandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews, including Jerry Smith and
Donnie Smith. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 3
p.m. Thursday by Dr. Daniel E. Scott. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial
Park. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Virginia
Heights Baptist Church. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, Wednesday,
where the family will recieve friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
