A SMART MOVE FOR EDUCATION

ACCOLADES of praise to Lewis-Gale Clinic for sponsoring the Smart Card to which all high-school students in the Roanoke Valley and Botetourt are entitled. What an incentive, as well as a reward, to maintain good grades (A/B honor roll) or make a substantial improvement in grades from the previous semester! This entitles one to a Silver Smart Card by which students receive discounts from more than 85 businesses. Doing the above, plus community service, earns one a Gold Smart Card which means even bigger discounts. About 1,800 students have taken advantage of this reward system.

This is a great example of how Roanoke businesses can support education, and, more importantly, support our youth as a group, unified, not divided by race, religion, public/private schools, or city/county districts.

The card is another reason I am proud to claim Roanoke as our home and to be part of the educational system. Let's continue to reward and honor schools for their academic achievements. CATHERINE A. CAMPBELL ROANOKE
