HOKIES DROP SPIDERS IN BASEBALL

Virginia Tech (29-11) held off Richmond (24-15) for a 5-3 non-conference college baseball victory Wednesday at Blacksburg.

With one out and the Hokies leading in the top of the eighth inning, Richmond used two singles and a wild pitch to pull to 5-3. Tech left-hander Rob Gibson later came on and struck out pinch hitter Ed Tober. A walk loaded the bases, then Gibson got center fielder Mark Budzinski to hit a line drive to left field that the Hokies' Mike Reedy caught to end the threat. A double play got Tech out of a none-out jam in the ninth, and Robby Cope earned his first save. The Hokies got solo home runs from Dee Dalton in the fourth and David Fitt in the fifth.

Tech is host to South Florida, the Metro Conference's first-place team, in a three-game series at English Field beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
