COURT OVER, TROUBLE BEGINS

Nellie Sue Whitt appealed one assault conviction Wednesday and quickly got embroiled in a second one.

Whitt appeared in Roanoke County Circuit Court at 10:30 a.m. to appeal a conviction for beating up her boyfriend's estranged wife last fall.

Whitt and her boyfriend, Michael Anthony Stanback, left the courtroom smiling and holding hands.

Less than an hour later, Whitt called police to a convenience store near Tanglewood Mall to complain that Stanback had shoved her into a glass door.

A Roanoke County police spokesman said that Stanback was charged with assault and battery.

Stanback, 36, later was released on bond from the Roanoke County Jail.

Whitt's relationships have led to more serious trouble in Bedford County, where she is charged in the July 1991 death of her fiance, who was run over by his own truck.

Whitt, 45, is free on bond pending a trial on the first-degree murder charge, scheduled for August in Bedford County Circuit Court.
