BOTETOURT'S SHELTON NO-HITS PULASKI 7-0

Lord Botetourt left-hander Chad Shelton no-hit Pulaski County in a 7-0 non-district baseball victory Wednesday at Daleville.

Shelton (2-2) struck out 11, did not walk a batter and threw only 76 pitches. He missed a perfect game by one hit batsman and one error by the Cavaliers (8-3).

In other baseball:

At William Fleming, the Colonels bashed Cave Spring 11-5, handing the Knights their first Roanoke Valley District loss. Al Holland Jr. went 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI to lead Fleming (4-7 overall, 3-4 district). He also pitched the complete game and struck out 12 while scattering nine hits. The Knights are 9-2 and 6-1.

At Maher Field, Salem rallied from an eight-run deficit and beat Patrick Henry 14-12 in a non-district game. The Spartans tied it 11-11 in the sixth on Mike Quinn's two-run double. In the top of the seventh, Charlie Hammersley's two-run single drove in the go-ahead runs. PH is 1-9.

At Northside, Shannon Gray went 4-for-5 and scored twice as William Byrd ripped the Vikings 9-4 in a Blue Ridge District game. Northside had eight errors.

\ SOCCER: At River's Edge, Charles Cunningham scored four goals as Roanoke Catholic (4-5) beat James River 8-0.

\ LACROSSE: At Salem, Shane Price scored three times as the Spartans beat Cave Spring 6-0.

At Patrick Henry, Vinton defeated Patrick Henry 6-4 behind three goals by Jay Reynolds.

\ SOFTBALL: At Alleghany, Salem beat Alleghany 9-7 in a Blue Ridge District game as Rhonda Rankin hit two homers.

At Buchanan, James River (11-1) clipped Lord Botetourt (10-3) 7-6 in a non-district game as Amber Vines singled twice and drove in a run.

At William Byrd, the Terriers (9-3, 4-2) pounded Northside (3-8, 1-5) 16-2 in a Blue Ridge District game. Deanna Aldrich went 4-for-5, scored four runs, drove in six and homered twice.

At Patrick Henry, the Patriots patched together a three-run rally to beat Franklin County 4-2 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Emily Pecoul and Maggie Gumpert each had two hits for PH (3-8, 3-2).

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Salem, Northside's Jonathan Stewart won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs as Northside won a Blue Ridge District meet with 98 points over Salem (64), Alleghany (54) and Rockbridge (32).

Glenvar finished an unbeaten Pioneer District schedule by scoring 132 points to beat Parry McCluer (77), Craig County (15) and Highland (8). Chad Wallace won the long jump, triple jump and the 400-meter dash.

At Dublin, Cave Spring beat Pulaski County 85-54 in a Roanoke Valley District meet as Ronde Barber won both hurdles events.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Patrick Henry, Arminta Crosby won the long jump and the 100- and 220-yard dashes as the Patriots scored 83 1/2 points to swamp Franklin County (42) and Heritage (37 1/2).

At Dublin, Cave Spring beat Pulaski County 86-46 in the Roanoke Valley District behind two victories each by Emily Rakes (high jump, 300 meters) and Stephanie Scholfield (long, triple jumps).

Trish Nervo (1,600- and 3,200-meters) and Emilee Hall (100- and 300-meter hurdles) won twice each as Glenvar (103) won a Pioneer District meet with Highland (53), Craig County (31) and Parry McCluer (24).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At River's Edge, Salem defeated Patrick Henry 2-1 in overtime as Karren Eggers scored twice for the Spartans' first-ever victory over the Patriots in this sport.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: At River's Edge, freshman Andrew Thomas remained unbeaten in Roanoke Valley District play at 5-0. Thomas, who is 5-2 overall, beat Scott Akers 6-0, 6-0 as Patrick Henry topped Franklin County 8-1. Thomas has three matches left and hasn't lost a set in district play.
