POLICE SET UP I-81 DRUG-CHECK DETOUR

Roanoke County authorities used an electronic sign to divert potential drug users from Interstate 81 into a roadside check involving 50 police officers.

Northbound travelers near Dixie Caverns were warned by the sign of a "Police Drug Search Ahead."

When the motorists pulled off I-81, police asked them for permission to search their cars.

Police said 105 of 107 motorists stopped by police gave permission for the cars to be searched.

Four were charged with marijuana violations. Others were charged with traffic infractions.

The traffic stops took place for just over four hours beginning about 10:15 a.m.
