VA. URGED TO TAKE GM ACTION

A Pulaski couple's pickup-truck accident in Ohio is being used by a national consumer group to convince Virginia's attorney general of the need to push action against General Motors.

In a letter dated Thursday and addressed to Attorney General Stephen Rosenthal, Motor Voters asked the state official to use "all the resources at your disposal to ensure that General Motors recall its 1973-87 C/K pickups with side-mounted gas tanks."

According to news accounts, Gabor Egyed and Maggie Egyed of Pulaski were riding in their 1984 Chevrolet Scotsdale pickup on Interstate 77 in Ohio on April 9 when a vehicle crossed the median and struck the truck in the side.

The impact ruptured the pickup's gas tank and the vehicle exploded in flames. The Egyeds were rescued by a bicyclist who witnessed the crash.

Motor Voters said its action is part of a national campaign involving 31 groups.
