SHAVER'S PLAY CARRIES NORTH CROSS

Ryan Shaver capped a huge day with a two-out, two-run game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning as North Cross edged visiting Holy Cross 14-13 in high school baseball Thursday.

Shaver finished 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. His final hit gave the Raiders their only lead and Holy Cross its only Virginia Independent Conference loss of the season. North Cross' Aaron Lange and Ed Machado also homered.

In other action Thursday:

Rykey Rumbley tossed a three-hitter and had a run-scoring double to lead Roanoke Valley Christian to a 3-2 Virginia Independent Conference victory over Hargrave Military, and Robert Spencer's bases-loaded double gave the Eagles a 15-14 victory in the nightcap. The doubleheader sweep put RVC (7-5 overall, 7-5 in the conference) into the league tournament that starts Tuesday in Lynchburg and knocks Hargrave (5-7, 5-7) out.

Ryan Palmer went 2-for-3 and Salem's Charlie Hammersley and Ryan Blevins each stole home in double-steal situations as Salem upset Alleghany 5-3 for its first Blue Ridge District victory. Blevins also tossed a six-hitter for the victory.

\ SOFTBALL: Covington's Michelle Jeter drove in three runs and Laura Morgan tossed a two-hitter in the 15-0 win over visiting Craig County.

At Hot Springs, Glenvar scored eight runs in the first two innings and held on for a 10-8 Pioneer District win over Bath County (3-5, 2-5). The Highlanders (10-5, 7-1) got two hits each from Jennifer Dennis and Holly Wimmer.

Lord Botetourt (10-3, 5-1) started an exclusively freshman and sophomore lineup and beat visiting Rockbridge County 12-1 to sweep a Blue Ridge District doubleheader. Ginger Layman, a sophomore, allowed two hits and struck out eight in five innings. Freshman Teresa Snodgrass doubled, tripled and drove in four runs. In the first game, Ashley Moore had a three-run home run and Janell Sowers tossed a one-hitter in a 20-1 victory in the opener.

At North Cross, Jackie Hinman went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI as Roanoke Catholic got past North Cross 11-8. For the Raiders, Blair Calvert had three hits and an RBI.

Roanoke Valley Christian's Stephanie Webb doubled twice and had three hits and three RBI as the Eagles swamped Stuart Hall 16-1 in a Blue Ridge Conference game at RVC. Amy Hickox added three hits and two RBI for the Eagles (8-4, 7-3).

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Glenvar wrapped up the Pioneer District championship by defeating Parry McCluer 8-1. Aaron Johnson (10-0) and Wes Jones (8-0) completed undefeated seasons for the Highlanders (8-2, 4-0).

Salem shut out Lord Botetourt 9-0 to complete an undefeated Blue Ridge District championship season. The Spartans' No. 1 player, Eddel Veloso, defeated Jay Gilliland 6-1, 7-5 to set up a playoff between the two today to determine the regular-season singles champ. The doubles team of David Arnold and Jeff Henley of Salem (10-1, 10-0) won and get the top seed for the tournament.

Cave Spring beat Patrick Henry 8-1 to finish the Roanoke Valley District season at 8-0. Four Knights - Randy Price, Jared Dunkin, Bill Rawlings and Jason Bialek - were undefeated.

\ SOCCER: At River's Edge, Kelly Graham and Brian Melton each scored as William Fleming downed Franklin County 2-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. The Colonels are 3-5-1, 1-4-1.

At Northside, Igor Marcello scored two goals and the Vikings outshot Rockbridge County 37-3 in a 5-1 win.

At Cave Spring, J.P. Wilson scored the winning goal on a penalty kick as Patrick Henry defeated the Knights 2-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Bobby Warnick scored for Cave Spring.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At William Byrd, Lord Botetourt beat the Terriers 85-41 in a dual meet. For the Cavaliers, Amy Heath was a triple winner.

\ GOLF: John Han of Lynchburg Christian fired a nine-hole total of 35 to take medalist honors, but Roanoke Valley Christian's 163 was the team low in a Virginia Independent Conference tournament at Poplar Forest Golf Club. LCA had 169 for second and North Cross 178. RVC (13-0 VIC) will be top seed when the conference tournament starts Tuesday at Countryside.
