SLAYING TRIAL ORDERED

A judge found probable cause Thursday to support charges against a 17-year-old accused of killing a man at a Roanoke housing project.

The youth also was ordered to stand trial as an adult. He is not being identified because his attorney has the option of appealing that decision in an effort to keep the case in juvenile court.

The teen-ager is accused of murder and use of a firearm in the March 24 slaying of 29-year-old Ivory F. Williams of Roanoke.

Williams was found lying face down on a Centre Avenue sidewalk about 2:45 a.m. He had been shot four times in the chest and leg.

A teen-age friend of the accused testified Thursday they were riding around in a rental car the night of March 24 when they spotted Williams at the Lansdowne housing project.

The 17-year-old approached Williams and asked about some money that was owed to him, the witness testified.

The youth then pulled a chrome-plated handgun, fired at least four shots and fled, the witness said.

The 17-year-old was arrested three weeks later, and has been in custody since.

Unless Judge Beverley B. Bowers' decision is reversed on appeal, the youth's case will go to Circuit Court for trial as an adult.

"From our point of view, a person who is willing to carry a firearm and use it should be held accountable, whatever their age," said Chief Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Betty Jo Anthony.
