COLLEGE'S ONLY FEMALE NAMED VALEDICTORIAN

Tanja Schiffer, the only woman in Hampden-Sydney College's class of 1993, has been named the school's valedictorian.

With only one B+ to mar a straight-A average, Schiffer finished with a 3.99 grade-point average - the highest in the class, school officials said Wednesday.

Hampden-Sydney limits regular enrollment to men. Only women with a connection to the school may graduate. Schiffer is the daughter of James Schiffer, an English professor. Her mother, Susan, works in the college library.

She is only the fifth woman to graduate from the school in at least 35 years. - Associated Press
