CARTOON DOESN'T AFFECT MINORITY ENROLLMENT

Minority enrollment does not appear to have been affected at the College of William & Mary by a school magazine cartoon depicting blacks wearing shirts labeled "watermelon" and "fried chicken."

The number of minority students who have made deposits to attend the college next year - about 150 - is running close to last year's number.

Earl Granger, the school's coordinator of multicultural recruitment, said he didn't know of anyone who had decided not to come to the college because of the controversy.

The magazine's editors have apologized for the cartoon, saying it was intended to spoof racial stereotypes.

The college has about a 17 percent minority enrollment. - Associated Press
