BROWN CARRIES BUCS PAST BULLS

Mike Brown homered and doubled Thursday night to lead the Salem Buccaneers to a 4-2 Carolina League baseball victory over the Durham Bulls.

Brown's sixth homer of the season was his third in this series and the sixth in the past eight games.

"I've hit the ball good in the past," said the Salem first baseman. "But not like this. I'm just looking to hit the ball as hard as possible every at-bat."

Brown's homer followed one by Keith Thomas and gave the Buccaneers a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Salem pitcher Dennis Konuszewski had his best outing of the season. He allowed four singles in four innings and retired 10 batters in a row at one point before being knocked out of the game by a line drive off the bat of Manny Jimenez.

Konuszewski, 0-5 with a 6.75 ERA entering the game, suffered a badly bruised right wrist, Salem manager Scott Little said. The extent of the injury won't be known until the swelling goes down.

Kevin Rychel picked up the victory in relief. Catcher Marcus Hanel had three hits for Salem. \
