FOR NOW, ST. JUDE'S IS `ST. HOLDREN'S'

"St. Holdren's." That's how some members of ST. JUDE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH of Radford refer to the congregation's temporary quarters in the former Holdren's Appliance store across the river in Fairlawn. The congregation outgrew its Tyler Avenue sanctuary in Radford and sold the structure to Radford University.

The church recently signed a contract to construct a new building, which won't be ready until early next year. It will be right outside Radford city limits on Virginia 177 in Montgomery County, just down the road from its old building.

Martin Bros. Contractors of Roanoke is expected to start work soon on a two-floor, 12,000-square-foot structure. The new building and relocation have been in the church's plans for several years.

In the meantime, the church's coordinator of religious education, Carol Bobzin, said "St. Holdren's" is serving the congregation "beautifully." As a result of the temporary location, St. Jude holds only one mass Sunday, at 11 a.m. There's also a Saturday evening service at 5:15. St. Jude's temporary location is at 7318 Peppers Ferry Road. For more information, call 639-5341.

A couple of miles down the road, the FAIRLAWN CHURCH OF GOD this week will stage "The Judgment," a play based on Hebrews 9:27: "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment."

Performances of "The Judgment" will be Thursday through Sunday at 7 p.m. at the church on Peppers Ferry Road (Virginia 114) near Peppers Ferry Bridge.

A nursery will be available for children 3 and under.

For more information, call 639-1511.

The focus will be on mothers Sunday at CHRISTIANSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 107 W. Main St. The 10:55 a.m. service also will receive new members and a special Mother's Day offering to support older adults living in synod residential and health care facilities. The offering also supports the volunteer network of older-adult ministry enablers and their work.

Following worship, a spaghetti dinner honoring all mothers and new members will be held at 12:15 p.m.

Those who wish to attend should make reservations by calling the church at 382-2802 or by signing a blue card from the friendship registers during the service.

The church's tennis round-robin event will be May 16, 2-5 p.m., at the Round Meadow Country Club. All playing levels are welcome. If you'd like to get in on the action, call Denny Woodyard at 382-4200 days, or 382-8978 evenings.
