FREE READING MAY 16 AT BLUE RIDGE BOOKS

Writers from Wytheville, Galax, Pulaski and Blacksburg as well as West Virginia and North Carolina will read from their works of poetry, fiction and local history at 4 p.m. May 16 at Blue Ridge Books.

Many of those who will be doing the reading have been taking writing classes at the bookstore from Liza Field, who had taught writing previously at Ann Arbor (Mich.) Middle School, University of Michigan, Virginia Western Community College and Southwestern College in Kansas. She has had poetry, essays and stories published in 10 journals and anthologies and broadcast on PBS and BBC radio.

Starting June 15, Field will offer a creative writing class in poetry at the store for young adults ages 13-19 and, starting June 16, a similar class for children 9-12 years old. Each will be a three-week course.

The young-adult class will meet Tuesdays and the children's class Wednesdays, both from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The fee for each student is $35. Students should bring notebooks and pencils with them.
