LUTHERAN CONVENTION SET FRIDAY-SUNDAY

About 650 adults and youth from Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Virginia congregations will be at Roanoke College from May 14-16 for their annual convention. Their theme will be "Evangelism: We are not ashamed of the Gospel."

Keynote speaker, the Rev. Dr. Paul Harms, will address the lay and clergy delegates at 5 p.m. on the opening Friday session, at 10:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. on Saturday and at the closing worship at 10 a.m. on Sunday. These sessions all are open to the public. Harms is a professor at the denominational Trinity Seminary in Columbus, Ohio.

Keith Brown, a member of the staff of the Virginia Synod office in Salem, said about 100 young people are included in the advance registration figure; they hold their own convention concurrent with older members and join for some sessions.

A new congregation, St. Thomas, in the Fauquier County town of Bealton will be welcomed into the synod. Brown said resolutions this year are minimal though discussion probably will occur on issues brought to the convention from individual parishes.
