2 RADFORD STUDENTS KILLED

Two Radford University students were killed Thursday in South Carolina when they were thrown from a four-wheel-drive vehicle after it failed to negotiate a curve, police said.

William R. Watson Jr., 25, and Deadrea Ellen Quesenberry, 19, died at the scene of the afternoon accident in Chesterfield County a few miles south of the North Carolina border, Highway Patrol Cpl. John Vaughn said Friday.

Watson was driving east on South Carolina 9 and was bearing right into a curve when the vehicle, which had a roll bar but no top, veered across the center line into the westbound lane, Vaughn said.

He apparently tried to jerk it back into the proper lane, but it went into a ditch off the right-hand side, flipped and hit a tree, Vaughn said. Watson and Quesenberry, who were not wearing seatbelts, were thrown more than 40 feet.

The two were heading to Myrtle Beach, Coroner Bob Robeson said.
