At Daleville, Mark Freeland scored the winning run on a single by Brian Crosswhite in the eighth inning to give Northside a 5-4 victory over Blue Ridge District foe Lord Botetourt.
The Vikings led 3-0 before the Cavaliers tied the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lord Botetourt (8-4, 2-3) took the lead on a solo homer by Jack Johnson in the bottom of the fifth. Ben Taylor of Northside (9-3, 4-3) hit his second home run of the game to tie the score 4-4 in the top of the sixth.
At Maher Field, Roanoke Valley District foes Patrick Henry and William Fleming split a doubleheader. The Patriots won the first game 13-12 in eight innings. The Colonels won the nightcap 11-3.
In the first game, Larry Hall hit an RBI-single in the eighth inning to give Patrick Henry (2-10, 2-5) the victory. Al Holland Jr. led William Fleming with four hits and one RBI.
Holland had two hits and another RBI to help the Colonels win the second game. Brad Wright and Corey Plunkett had two hits each for the Patriots.
Heritage's Jeff Roberts doubled, and had two hits and two RBI as the Pioneers rode a 10-hit attack to a 7-2 non-district victory over slumping Cave Spring on the Knights' diamond. Cave Spring (9-4) had nine hits and stranded eight to lose its second straight game. Heritage (6-5) came in after having lost four one-run games in the Western District.
At Covington, Stacy Bishop was 3-for-3 with two RBI as the Cougars downed Pioneer District foe Craig County 7-2. Charlie Carper pitched a complete game for Covington (5-9, 5-3 Pioneer), striking out 11, giving up five hits and walking one.
Jason Anderson had four hits, drove in four runs and tossed a two-hitter over six innings and Glenvar had to survive a bases-loaded one-out situation in the seventh inning to win a 10-6 Pioneer District victory at Bath County. The Chargers (5-5, 5-3) had the bases loaded four times and scored one run out of it. Glenvar (5-4, 5-2) had 13 hits and took advantage of seven errors to displace Bath County in first place.
\ LACROSSE: Brian Cooley had three goals and Shawn Gwyn had a pair of goals to lead Vinton to a 7-2 victory over Salem at the Salem American Legion field. The win earned Vinton its second straight regular-season championship in the Roanoke Valley High School Lacrosse League. Vinton is 10-4 overall, 5-1. Salem is 3-3 in the league. Vinton is the top seed and Salem the second seed. Patrick Henry and Cave Spring will have the last two seeds.
\ SOFTBALL: Rhonda Rankin tossed a complete-game seven-strikeout three-hitter for her first shutout and drove in a run as Salem beat William Byrd 3-0 in a Blue Ridge District game on the Spartans' diamond. Candy Munsey and Yo Helm also drove in runs for the Spartans (14-1 overall, 7-0 in the district).
Michelle Hudson tossed a one-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Franklin County to a 15-0 Roanoke Valley District victory over William Fleming. Dawn Webb had two doubles, two runs, and an RBI for the Eagles, who had 16 hits.
At Patrick Henry, Patriot pitchers gave up only six hits, but their fielders committed 10 errors as Cave Spring trounced Patrick Henry 19-2 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Melissa Grimm had two hits and one RBI for the Knights (10-2, 5-0 Roanoke Valley). Teammate Rene Kopstein struck out 10 and gave up four hits. The Patriots are 3-9, 3-3.
\ SOCCER: Chris Andres had eight saves and J.P. Wilson had a pair of assists as host Patrick Henry defeated previously undefeated William Byrd 3-0. Andres has two shutouts for the Patriots (4-3-3). Byrd is 10-1.
\ GIRLS SOCCER: At Cave Spring, Tiffany Jackson scored the only goal one minute into the second half as the Knights downed Patrick Henry 1-0. Cave Spring is 9-0-1. Patrick Henry is 5-2-1.
\ BOYS' TRACK: At Buchanan, James River's Daryl Williams won the 400- and 800-meter runs and ran on the winning 1,600-relay team to lead the Knights to a victory. James River had 89 points, Alleghany 66 and Highland one. Alleghany's Michael Hunter won the long, high and triple jumps and the 300 hurdles.
\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Buchanan, Alleghany's Andrea Moore won the discus and high jump and the Mountaineers won the meet with 85 points, followed by James River (29) and Highland County (22).
