"If it's possible, Roanoke County needs to support Explore," Brenda Flora Wainwright said.
Wainwright, the owner of a wholesale nursery and landscaping company, said the county investment in the living-history state park would pay off in tourism and jobs.
She became the second Republican in as many days to announce for the Hollins District seat. County Republicans will meet today to decide whether Wainwright or Charlie Millican will face incumbent Bob Johnson in November.
Johnson, a Democrat, is expected to announce Monday that he will seek a third four-year term.
Wainwright grew up on a farm in Hollins that has been in her family since the 1930s. She is a mortgage loan officer for Eastern Fidelity Mortgage Corp. and owner of Plantation Ground Covers, a landscaping business.
Wainwright said she was concerned about the county's embarking on several expensive projects, such as the $73 million Spring Hollow Reservoir, during an economic recession.
Though it is too late to turn back, Wainwright said she would work to keep taxes and water fees as low as possible.
The mother of two school-age girls, Wainwright is an officer in the Mountain View Elementary PTA and is a cheerleading sponsor with the North Roanoke Recreation Club.
