LIVE FROM LYNCHBURG: TOUR DUPONT

How big is the Tour DuPont's ride into Lynchburg this week?

Well, the arrival of America's foremost cycling race in Central Virginia will have telecast competitors combining forces to present a 90-minute live special on the event.

WSET (Channel 13) and WJPR/WVFT (Channels 21/27) will air the Tour's Stage 7 ride into the Hill City at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on Channels 21/27. Much of the production capabilities and personnel will be provided by Channel 13.

"It's a collaborative effort and that makes it unique," said Robb Gray, general manager of WJPR/WVFT. "We sat down and talked and decided how best we could serve viewers. We think we've found it."

WSET general manager Jerry Heilman and Gray have been operating their stations in the Roanoke-Lynchburg market for about three years. Each said he hasn't seen as much enthusiasm for an event as Lynchburg is showing for the Tour DuPont.

Dave Ross of WJPR/WVFT and Dennis Carter of WSET will anchor the show, which will feature the finish of the Tour's 126.5-mile stage from Richmond. An analyst to be named from Tour sponsor Medalist Sports will complete the race announce team. With microwave and satellite capabilities, the show will pick up the riders on the outskirts of Lynchburg and follow them to the finish line at E.C. Glass High on Langhorne Road.
