DISEASE OUTBREAK KILLS 1 IN LONDON

The fountains in Trafalgar Square were dry Saturday and nearby water cooling towers shut down while authorities checked for the source of a Legionnaire's disease outbreak, which has killed at least one person.

The victim - and two people who recovered from the disease - had been in the area 10 days before the onset of symptoms, officials said.

Each year more than 4 million people visit Trafalgar Square.

Initial tests found no trace of the bacteria that causes Legionnaire's disease. The bacteria breeds in dirty, warm pools of stagnant water and spreads through water vapor. - Associated Press
