In men's events, Hokie Chris Sieben threw the javelin 194 feet, 4 inches and Geof Tonini leaped 45 feet, 1 3/4 inches in the triple jump.
Meredith Newby tossed the shot put 37 feet, 1 3/4 inches in the women's competition. Krista Harmon jumped 33 feet, 9 1/2 inches in the triple jump, Heidi Allen ran the 1,500-meters in 4 minutes, 48.51 seconds and Kari Manheimer threw the javelin 111 feet, 6 inches.

High school runners from William Fleming and Patrick Henry placed in 12 events in the 60-school Newport News Invitational.
Arminta Crosby led the Patriot girls, finishing second in the 100-meter dash, fourth in the 200-meter dash and running the first leg of the third-place 400-meter relay team. Regina Johnson finished second in the shot put and third in the discus and Kathryn McGrath finished fourth in the 800-meter run.
Jamie Price was the lone finisher for the Patriots' boys team. He placed third in the 200-meter dash.
William Fleming runners Paul Witt, Leroy Witt, Ernest Harrington and Clyde Lewis finished third in the 400-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay placed fifth. Todd Lewis finished third in the 400-meter dash and Milliner placed fourth in the long jump.
At River's Edge, Enrique Lavin and Rodrigo Lebezma each scored one goal as Randolph-Macon Academy (4-2-1 overall, 1-2-1 district) downed Roanoke Catholic 2-1 in a Virginia Independent Conference high school soccer match. Charles Cunningham scored the lone goal for the Celtics (4-6, 1-4).
Roanoke Catholic eighth grader P.J. Moyer made the all-conference team at the Virginia Independent Conference track championships at Harrisonburg. Moyer was second in the long jump, third in the 200-meters, third in the triple jump and fourth in the 100-meters. Fishburne Military Academy won with 95 points. Roanoke Catholic finished fourth of five teams with 17 points.
In Lynchburg, Robey Caldwell (4-0) pitched a complete-game seven-hitter and Cave Spring defeated Heritage 9-1 in a non-conference baseball game. The Knights (10-4) broke a two-game losing streak and had 14 hits. Brent Shorter and Chad Smith each had two hits and two RBI. Heritage is 6-6.
Cave Spring defeated E.C. Glass 2-1 in the consolation game of the E.C. Glass Invitational soccer tournament in Lynchburg. Scott Mangus and Jamie Garcerant had second-half goals for the Knights (6-4-1). Thomas Jefferson of Arlington defeated Clover Hill of Richmond in the championship game. Thomas Jefferson advanced by beating Cave Spring 5-0 on Friday. Clover Hill beat E.C. Glass 1-0 in two overtimes.
