VOTER REGISTRATION

Newcomers to the New River Valley area who want to vote in the next election must register first.

Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles and Floyd counties and Radford have registrar's offices. All offices are open at least five days a week. During designated times before an election, they also must schedule special Saturday hours for registration and absentee ballotting.

Prospective voters must have lived in the county or city before registering. They must register at least 29 days before an election to be able to vote in it. This means to vote on Election Day, Nov. 2, you must register by Oct. 4. Here are locations, phone numbers and normal hours:

\ Montgomery County: Courthouse, Christiansburg; 382-5741; Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

\ Pulaski County: Room 218, Historic Courthouse, 52 W. Main St., Pulaski; 980-2111; Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

\ Giles County: 507 Wenonah Ave. (Old Law Building), Pearisburg; 921-2802; Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

\ Floyd County: Courthouse, Floyd; 745-9350; Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
