UMW ANNOUNCEMENT ON CONTRACT TALKS SET

The United Mine Workers have scheduled a news conference for this afternoon on the deadlocked contract talks with the nation's biggest coal companies.

"I'm sure there'll be some changes," UMW District 17 President Bob Phalen said Sunday, refusing to elaborate. Union officials wouldn't provide any other details.

The union's contract with 12 companies that make up the Bituminous Coal Operators Association expired Feb. 1. One month later, after a strike was called, negotiators agreed to a 60-day extension of the contract so talks could continue.

The extension expired May 3. Union miners have continued to report to work. No new talks have been scheduled.
