BUCS WIN WITH START

The Salem Buccaneers scored three runs in the first inning and Marty Neff belted his league-leading ninth home run Sunday in a 6-4 Carolina League baseball victory over the Winston-Salem Spirits.

Winston-Salem pitcher Jason Angel walked the first three hitters, and two scored when second baseman Amador Arias threw away the ball trying for a double play. That was the first of six errors the Spirits committed.

Neff's two-run homer in the third inning tied him with Doug Hecker of Lynchburg for the league lead and gave the Bucs a 5-1 lead.

The Spirits rallied to close their deficit to 5-4 on Chad Mottola's two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Jason Christiansen, but Salem relief ace Jeff McCurry snuffed the comeback. McCurry gave up a one-out single in the ninth before gaining his ninth save, tops in the league.

Three Winston-Salem throwing errors in the ninth gave the Buccaneers another run.

Salem shortstop Tony Womack went 3-for-3 to lead Salem's eight-hit attack.

Mariano De Los Santos (3-1) struck out seven and walked none before being removed in the sixth. He picked up the victory. \
