OBIT HOBACK, DELENA AGATHA PAFFORD

HOBACK, Delena Agatha Pafford, of Wytheville, died Friday, May 7, 1993, at Birdmont Health Care Center. She was born in Marion, Va., on November 19, 1911. Preceding her in death were her father, Robert Leonard Pafford, mother, Nannie Mae Morris Pafford; brothers, John Clifton Pafford and Robert Leonard Pafford Jr.; sister, Oma Lee Pafford Russell and husband of fifty-two years, Rufus Newton ("Buddy") Hoback. She attended Wytheville High School and later completed graduation requirements. She was a graduate of the Wytheville branch of the Jefferson School of Commerce in Charlottesville, Va., receiving her diploma in the intensive secretarial field. Further studies enabled her to meet all demands for Virginia State Board certification as a licensed practical nurse. At the time of her retirement, she was employed by Wytheville Hospital and Sanitarium. Former employment included working in sewing factories in Wytheville and Pulaski and serving more than twenty years (February 15, 1938 - September 8, 1959) with the Wytheville Knitting Mills, Inc. in the positions of looper, topper and forelady in charge of the looping and seaming departments. For a number of years, she cared for patients as a licensed practical nurse in the family practice office of Paul C. Hendrix, M.D. Delena began attending St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wytheville, in 1924 and joined in membership on profession of faith on September 30, 1934 with the Rev. Dr. A.V. Rudy officiating. While continuing as a faithful church member, she also showed dedication in recent years to the Lucile Kincer Bible Class and to the Wesleyan Circle. She took great pride in being a member of the Wytheville Rebekah Lodge #57 and of its Past Grand Club. Surviving her are her daughter and son-in-law, Dolores Lorraine Hoback Kanner and Albert Victor Kanner, M.D., Madison, Wis.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Sue Ellen Kanner Anthony and Jerry Ray, Wake Forest, N. C., Linda and James Douglas Kanner, Monticello, Ill., Mary and Steven David Kanner, Maplewood, Minn., Ruth and Jeffrey Alan Kanner, Phoenix, Ariz.; one great-granddaughter, Casey Lee Anthony, Wake Forest, N. C.; brother-in-law, Houston Raines Russell, Providence Forge, Va.. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, loyal professional associates, loving friends and generous neighbors also survive. Funeral services will be at St. Paul United Methodist Church Tuesday, May 11, 1993 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett officiating. The family will greet friends Monday evening from 7 to 9 at the Grubb Funeral Home. The Wytheville Rebekah Lodge #57 will conduct a memorial service at 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home. Interment will be in East End Cemetery, Wytheville. Grubb Funeral Home of Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
