The story must be original; we want you to make it up. It should not be something you read or heard from someone else.
You can make your story as short as you like, but it must not be longer than 200 words. You can submit an illustration with your story, but you don't have to.
Entries will be divided into three age groups: kindergarten-second grade; third-fifth grade; and sixth-eighth grade. Winners in each age group will receive Roanoke Times & World-News comics umbrellas and their stories will be published in NewsFun's final edition for the school year on June 7. Each winner's teacher will receive a Roanoke Times & World-News thermal mug.
Here's all you have to do:
Submit an original story with our beginning on a piece of paper. You may illustrate it; it may not exceed 200 words.
Include your name, grade, school, home telephone number, home address and school telephone number on a separate piece of paper, attached to your story.
Mail your entry to NewsFun's Story Contest, Roanoke Times & World-News, P.O. Box 2491. Roanoke, Va. 24010-2491.
All entries must be received by 9 a.m. on June 1. Only one entry per person.
Here's the beginning we are supplying to the story:
Justin and Ashley looked around the room helplessly. They tried to open both doors, but they were locked. How did they get themselves in this mess, they wondered. And, how would they get out of it?
From here, NewsFun readers, you're on your own. Continue our story and figure out how Justin and Ashley get home safely.
