Salem will play Northside this morning at 9 at the civic center for the championship. The district singles and doubles semifinals will follow in the afternoon.

Wes Jones won a three-set match and Richie Bryant won a second-set tie-breaker to stake host Glenvar to an early cushion and the Highlanders (9-2) went on to beat Cave Spring 7-2. It was Glenvar's first victory over the Knights, and it avenged the Highlanders' only loss last year.
\ BASEBALL: At Altavista, Anthony Poindexter slugged a three-run homer and Jefferson Forest roughed up Altavista 15-3. Teddy Wilson and Mark Tyler combined to strike out 11 and pitch a six-hitter for the Cavaliers (11-3).
\ SOFTBALL: At Cave Spring, five errors led to eight unearned runs and Cave Spring (11-2 overall, 6-0 district) rolled over William Fleming 16-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Ellen Jamison of Cave Spring went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Pam Bogunia went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases. For Fleming (0-12 overall), Laurie Simmons went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and pitcher Stacie Reedy went 1-for-3 and struck out four.
At North Cross, Virginia Episcopal defeated North Cross 8-4 in a non-conference game. Emily Davidson went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Virginia Episcopal (6-4). Blair Calvert went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run and drove in all four runs for the Raiders (6-6).
Roanoke Valley Christian (10-4) had 38 hits while sweeping a doubleheader from the Virginia School for the Deaf 21-1 and 22-0.
At Covington, Tracy Shaffer went 4-for-5 with three RBI to power Alleghany to a 16-10 win over Parry McCluer (8-5). Tracy Cummings and Alania Bartley each has three hits for Alleghany (5-7).
At Rocky Mount, Michelle Hudson pitched a nine-strikeout one-hitter as Franklin County (9-6) flattened visiting Heritage 5-0 in a non-district game.
\ SOCCER: At Salem, Sterling Turner and Aaron Gresham each scored three goals as Salem torched Alleghany 13-0. Owen Woodward added two goals for the Spartans.
At Bedford, Joel Allen scored three goals and John Ayers made seven saves as Liberty (8-2) routed Jefferson Forest 6-1. The Cavaliers are 8-1-1.
At River's Edge, North Cross remained unbeaten in the Virginia Independent Conference with a 4-0 victory over Roanoke Catholic. Scoring for the Raiders (13-1-2, 5-0) were Mark Roberts, Eric Mull, Jamie Bell and William Watkins. For the Celtics (4-7, 1-5), goalie Mike Kolnok had 23 saves.
Northside rallied from two goals down to tie visiting Lord Botetourt 2-2 in a Blue Ridge District game. Igor Marcello scored the tying goal for the Vikings (5-6-2, 5-4-1).
At Buchanan, Rockbridge County rallied from three goals down to defeat James River 8-5.
\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At North Cross, Emily Tegenkamp scored two goals and Patrick Henry shut out the Raiders 7-0.
Chanda Ingram scored three goals and Tiffany Jackson added the other as Cave Spring (10-0-1) defeated Martinsville 4-3 in a non-district game.
\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Radford will be aiming for its 13th straight New River District Tournament crown after beating Christiansburg 7-2 at the Dedmon Center. The Bobcats will play Blacksburg, which beat Carroll County 9-0, in the team finals today at 4 p.m.
