DYKE TO LEAVE EDUCATION POST EARLY IN SUMMER

Education Secretary James Dyke said Monday he will leave the post early this summer instead of January, when his four-year term ends, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Dyke has not submitted his resignation, but he told the newspaper he recently discussed the matter with Gov. Douglas Wilder. He said Wilder was supportive of his desire to return to the private sector.

"This has been quite a sacrifice for my family," he said of his daily commutes from Northern Virginia. He has four children, three of whom are enrolled in schools in the Washington suburbs. His wife, Ellen, is a real estate and corporate attorney.

Dyke declined to say what his plans are. - Associated Press
