GILES CLINCHES DISTRICT TITLE

Stevie Steeles had a two-run home run and pitched a complete game as Giles beat Shawsville 9-4 in Pearisburg to clinch the Mountain Empire District regular-season baseball championship Tuesday.

The title gives Giles an automatic berth in the Group A Region C Tournament.

Raypheal Milton contributed three hits for Giles (10-4 overall, 9-1 in the district), and Shannon Pyles had two RBI.

For Shawsville (9-5, 3-6), Ben Basham had a solo home run in the fifth inning.

In other baseball:

At Narrows, B.W. Hill threw a three-hitter for Fort Chiswell as the Pioneers defeated Narrows 3-1 in a Mountain Empire District game. Hill struck out 15 and walked none; he also tripled and scored a run for Fort Chiswell (8-3, 5-3). Cory McGlothin scored the run for the Green Wave (9-5, 5-3).

At Auburn, Todd Collins' complete-game five-hitter led Auburn past Bland 9-1 in a Mountain Empire District game. Collins struck out nine and walked two. Auburn's Bradley Hudgins had two homers among his three hits and four RBI.

At Lynchburg, Roanoke Valley Christian beat Fishburne Military Academy 13-4 in the first round of the Virginia Independent Conference Tournament. RVC (8-5, 7-5) plays Lynchburg Christian Academy in a semifinal game at 10 a.m. Saturday at Liberty University. Richard Booth had four RBI, and Nathan Hicks pitched 3 innings of hitless relief, striking out seven. Fishburne is 3-4 and 3-4.

\ GOLF: North Cross edged out previously unbeaten Roanoke Valley Christian by four strokes to win the Virginia Independent Conference Tournament at Countryside.

The Raiders shot a 312 team total and placed three golfers on the all-VIC team (low six). Hargrave Military was third (339) followed by Carlisle (345), Randolph-Macon (361), Lynchburg Christian (365) and Roanoke Catholic (391).

John Han of Lynchburg Christian was first individually with a 2-under-par 69. Joe Surkamer of RVC shot a 73 for second place, beating Tyler Pugh (73) of North Cross in a match of cards. Rounding out the all-VIC team was Benjy Kitts (74) of RVC and Lee Shirley (76) and Brian Whitaker (78) of North Cross.

\ SOFTBALL: Lynn Stohler drove in four runs as host William Byrd (10-4, 5-3) pounded Rockbridge County 15-0 in a five-inning Blue Ridge District game. Deanna Aldrich and Tracy Doupnik combined on a one-hitter. Doupnik and Aldrich each had two hits, and Tamasa Adams was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Rockbridge County is 0-13 and 0-8.

At Wasena Park, Lauren Phelan was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and was the winning pitcher for Roanoke Catholic as the Celtics pounded Carlisle 22-2. Also for Catholic (10-5), Jackie Hinman and Elaine Ronquillio were 4-for-4 with two runs scored and Liz Landry was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

At Lovingston, Melissa Dooley was 4-for-6 with four RBI and four runs scored as Liberty (11-3-1, 11-3-1) ripped Nelson County 20-2 in a six-inning Seminole District game. Kelly Witt was 4-for-4 with four runs and Gina Overstreet was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Karla Goff struck out seven and walked none on the mound. Nelson is 5-8 and 5-8.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Salem defeated Northside 7-2 in the Blue Ridge District team competition. In individual competition at the Salem Civic Center, Edell Veloso of Salem defeated Andrew Cox of Rockbridge County 6-4, 6-1 and Jay Gilleland of Lord Botetourt defeated Aaron Church of Northside 6-1, 6-1. In boy's doubles, Veloso and David Arnold of Salem defeated Miquel Castro and Justin Pasfield of William Byrd 7-0, 6-0, and Aaron Church and Jeremy Graybill of Northside defeated Jay Gilleland and Trey Tucker of Lord Botetourt 6-0, 6-1.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At the Salem Civic Center, Salem defeated Rockbridge County 6-3 in the Blue Ridge District Tournament team competition.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: On Monday, Chanda Ingram scored three goals and Tiffany Jackson added one as Cave Spring (10-0-1) defeated Martinsville 4-3 in a non-district game. Sam Ferguson had two goals and Leighton Kirby had one for Martinsville.
