RUNNING EVENTS PUT DEMONS, INDIANS IN CONTROL

Thunderstorms washed out part of the New River District high school track meet Tuesday, but it didn't rain on the Blacksburg girls' or Christiansburg boys' team parades.

After the running events at Radford High School, each team had a large lead. Christiansburg led Blacksburg 151-101 in the boys' competition. Blacksburg led 145-92 over Christiansburg in the girls' meet.

The field events were postponed until this afternoon at 3:30.

The top six individuals in each event and the top three relay teams advance to the Region IV meet May 22 at Radford High School.

Each leading team won seven of the 10 events Tuesday, and each had a double-winner who also ran on a victorious relay squad. Leading Christiansburg was hurdler Von Lewis, who won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles and ran the lead-off leg on the Demons' victorious 1,600-meter relay team.

"We had a talk right before the meet, we talked about determination," said Lewis. "We had our minds set on winning it. Then we came out and did our best."

For the Indians, it again was sprinter Katie Ollendick scoring the most points. She won the 200- and 400-meter dashes and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay squad.

"This is the time you emphasize team," Ollendick said. "When it comes time for district, region and state, then you work for the team to win. You put the best people out their in their best events and hope they come through."
