INDIANS RALLY PAST BUCS

Once Kevin Logsdon got over his Herculean delusions, he turned out to be a pretty good pitcher.

The Kinston Indians' left-hander survived a disastrous second inning to shut out the Salem Buccaneers for six innings, allowing time for his hitters to bang their way to the rescue at Municipal Field. The Indians ended with a come-from-behind, 7-6 Carolina League victory Tuesday night that left them alone in first place in the Southern Division. The Bucs (14-16), who have lost two of their past three, are a game back.

Salem, which had come in as the league's hottest team after havingwon eight of 10, stomped on Logsdon with spiked feet in the second. The Bucs parlayed six hits, including four doubles, into a 6-1 lead. Kinston had taken the early lead when Paul Meade belted a solo home run off Gary Wilson in the first.

Logsdon, who has beaten Salem twice, faced three batters over the minimum from the third through the eighth.

"We stuck it to him that one inning, but it didn't seem to faze him much," Salem manager Scott Little said.

Logsdon may have been fazed more than he looked.

"I had to start pitching and stop trying to overpower people," he said. "I did it in the first inning [retiring the first three in the order], and I thought that would continue. . . . I don't have a lot of hard stuff. Sometimes I can overpower people and sometimes I can't. Tonight, I couldn't."

Salem was overpowered by its defensive deficiencies. Two errors by third baseman Don Garvey on the same play led to two unearned runs in the fifth that made it 6-3. Two more unearned runs, including the go-ahead run, arrived in the eighth when the door was left open on Marty Neff's misadventure on a routine fly ball to right field.

\ BUCSHOTS: Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ted Simmons is in town for the Kinston series along with pitching instructor Pete Vuckovich and hitting instructor Steve Henderson. . . . Salem had some roster changes on the road trip. Pitcher Esteban Loaiza was sent back to Mexico City, from which he was on loan. Replacing him is left-hander Mark Mesewicz from Augusta, Ga. Marcus Ponder came from extended spring training to replace Jon Farrell, on the disabled list. Infielder Kevin Polcovich was promoted to Class AA Carolina, and Don Garvey returned from Augusta in his stead.
