NEW RIVER PEOPLE

K. MIKE FLEENOR JR. of Pulaski has been appointed circuit representative for the 27th Judicial Circuit on the Virginia Young Lawyers Conference.

Fleenor is associated with the Pulaski law firm of Crowell, Nuckols, Layman and Aust.

\ LEO ROBERT GIZZI of Christiansburg has been selected for a citizen of the year award from the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

\ CONNIE AKERS and CHRISTINA MACCHERONE helped Ideas at Work, the public magazine of National Business College in Salem, win the silver award in admissions in Marketing Report's eighth annual national college competition.

Akers, the art director, is from Radford.

Maccherone, the staff writer, is from Blacksburg.

The staff also includes Norma Lugar of Salem, editor, and Sheila Lusher of Rainelle, W.Va., circulation manager.

\ BARBARA CLOUSE and ERNESTINE FRITH represented the Montgomery County Farm Bureau at the 1993 Virginia Farm Bureau Statewide Women's Conference in Lynchburg in March.

\ CAROL KROEGER has been elected to the board of directors of the Montgomery County chapter of the American Red Cross.

Kroeger has an extensive background as a certified Red Cross first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and water safety instructor.

She will head the health and safety services committee.

The Montgomery County chapter of the American Red Cross has named ORMY BELL of Blacksburg the 1993 volunteer of the year.

Bell has volunteered for 27 years in various capacities, including help with bloodmobiles and hospital service, and she is a past member of the local chapter board.

Other volunteers honored by the Red Cross are: OLGA KIRK, 49 years; LENNA MOORE, 47 years; DIT PACK and ELEANORA SCHAD, 44 years; HELEN JUDKINS and DOROTHY SWIFT, 27 years; and DANESE DYE, INEZ WILSON and VENITA WITHERSPOON, 26 years.

The children's museum DiscoveryWorks in Radford chose officers and welcomed nine new board members at its annual meeting April 15. Officers for 1993-94 are: PATTY MANOR, president; TONY DISTLER, vice president; MARGARET HOSKINS, secretary; and GARY COLLIER, treasurer.

New board members are GARY COLLIER, BRIAN DENNISON, ANN GOLDSMITH, MARTY GORDON, JERRY HUTCHENS, ROBERT SMALL, LINDA SMALL, SANDRA TURAY and BARBARA TURK. Returning board members are TONY DISTLER, NANCY EATON, DANA GREGORY, MARGARET HOSKINS, SHERRY MABIE and PATTY MANOR.

The following people have retired from the government staff at Radford Army Ammunition Plant: ROBERT BRICKEY, equipment specialist; PATRICIA ZEEK, budget analyst; EVELYN WILSON, secretary; WILLIAM RICHARD SUTPHIN, safety and occupational health specialist; DONALD SUMNER, quality assurance specialist; HAROLD STOUT, property administrator; CARSON MORGAN JR., quality assurance specialist; FRED JONES, supervisory quality assurance specialist; JOSEPH FRIAR, quality assurance specialist; GEORGE EAST, quality assurance specialist; ROBERT BARTEE JR., quality assurance specialist; and BILLY WEDDLE, quality assurance specialist.
