VIRGINIA HIGHLANDS GETS $196,828 PROGRAM GRANT

Virginia Highlands Community College has been awarded $196,828 by the U.S. Department of Education for the first year of a five-year grant for a student support services program, Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, said Wednesday.

It was one of 70 colleges and universities to get a five-year grant, among 700 other grant recipients, for Project EXCEL, which provides counseling and other services to students with special circumstances.

Those circumstances include being the first of a family to attend college, meeting income level requirements or having a physical disability. Services include tutoring, counseling, referral services and cultural enrichment activities.

Boucher commended the college's president, N. DeWitt Moore Jr., and Project EXCEL Director Charlotte L. Faris for their initiative in the program. - Southwest bureau
